Procedure
Registration of the certificate
The ceremony does not close the file. For the marriage to take effect in the other legal systems concerned, the certificate must be transmitted, registered and issued in the correct form.
Registration in Italy
A marriage celebrated abroad by an Italian citizen is registered in the civil status records of the competent municipality. For citizens registered with AIRE, transmission is generally made through the consulate for the place of residence, which forwards the certificate to the municipality of registration.
The form of the certificate to be transmitted
- A multilingual extract under the applicable conventions, where available
- Alternatively, a full copy, apostilled and translated as required by the receiving office
- A preliminary check that names and personal details match the records exactly
Related consequences
Registration triggers updates to identity documents, civil status records, matrimonial property regime and immigration matters. We set out in writing the resulting formalities in each country concerned.
