A marriage celebrated in Spain: how to have it recognised in Italy
The marriage has been duly celebrated in Spain. For it to take effect in Italy, the certificate must be transmitted and entered in the civil status records.
The form of the Spanish certificate
The certificate may be issued in multilingual form under the applicable conventions, or as a full copy to be apostilled and translated. The first route is usually quicker, but not every office accepts it interchangeably, and confirming this in advance avoids repeating the exercise.
Route of transmission
- Citizens registered with AIRE: transmission through the Italian consulate for the place of residence
- Citizens resident in Italy: direct submission to the municipality of residence
- In either case, a preliminary check that names, surnames and dates match exactly
After registration
Registration updates marital status in the Italian records and allows Italian marriage certificates to be obtained, which are needed for later formalities: identity documents, matrimonial property regime and social security matters.
