Registered with AIRE: where marriage banns are published
AIRE is the register of Italian citizens resident abroad. Registration is not a mere formality: it determines which office is responsible for the preliminary marriage formalities.
Consular responsibility
For an Italian citizen registered with AIRE, the banns are applied for at the consulate for the place of residence, which publishes them and transmits them to the municipality of registration. The municipality of celebration then receives the certificate confirming that the banns have been published.
Documents usually required
- A valid Italian identity document
- Full personal details and identity document of the intended spouse
- Evidence relating to previous marriages, where applicable
- The Italian municipality where the ceremony will take place
Effect on timescales
The consular stage adds processing and transmission time that varies from post to post. This is the main reason we recommend starting the file four to six months before the intended date.
Where AIRE records are not up to date
AIRE records are sometimes incomplete or out of date: an address that no longer reflects the actual residence, or marital status not updated after a divorce. Those records must be put in order before the banns are applied for, not during the process.
